Past and Present Projects

Some of the great field projects I've been fortunate enough to work on, and the sort of skills I developed and applied in the process.

Kellogg Biological Station LTER

MSU Haddad Lab

In summer 2022, I worked as a field technician in Dr. Nick Haddad's Lab, collecting data on invertebrates across various projects within the LTER and LTAR systems. 

​

Demonstrated Skills:

  • Standardized surveys of pollinators according to Xerces Society protocol

  • Standardized surveys of butterflies and dragonflies

  • Vegetation surveys in agricultural plots and planted prairie strips

  • Pinning and identification of ants under the microscope

  • Maintenance and collection of invertebrate pitfall traps

Endangered Species Monitoring Technician

MSU Fitzpatrick Lab

In spring 2023, I worked as a Florida Scrub-jay monitoring technician at Jonathan Dickinson State Park.

Demonstrated Skills:

  • Nest searching and extended observation of individual FSJA behavior

  • Recognition of color bands and FSJA territory boundaries

  • Navigation of difficult terrain and dense, thorny Florida scrub

  • Use of ArcGIS collector for data collection and navigation

  • Operation of large 4x4 field vehicle

  • Extended periods of remote individual work

Bird and Bumblebee Monitoring Technician

Institute for Bird Populations

In Summer 2023, I worked on several projects in the North-Central Sierras through IBP. ​

Demonstrated Skills:

  • Point Counts in flooded meadows in the Sierras

    • Western Bird ID by sound and sight​

    • Navigation of wet and densely vegetated areas with handheld GPS

  • Bumblebee Surveys in Aspen groves​​

    • Identification of 20+ California bumblebee species

    • Capture, net extraction, and collection of bumblebees

    • ID of Sierra plants to species

    • Assessment of plant communities

  • Willow Flycatcher Surveys​​

  • Extended periods of remote individual work

California Condor Monitoring Intern

Ventana Wildlife Society

Demonstrated Skills:

  • Radio telemetry tracking of California Condors

  • ID of condors via wing tags

  • Supplemental feeding of condors​​

  • Monitoring of individual wild and captive condor behavior

  • Handling condors, replacing wing tags, conducting health checks
